Teaching retreat: Refuge and the Open Heart

The Buddhist teaching points out that we are all refugees, wandering in search of our true home, our buddha potential. We take refuge in whatever we can find: money, family, relationships, work, pleasure…so many transient rafts to keep our head above the water. Buddhist meditation offers us the way to find a more reliable and enduring refuge. This refuge works in tandem with the development of the spirit of enlightenment, the heart that cares for all. When we examine who and what we care for we might find that our caring is rather limited and based on anxiety and the hope of reciprocity. This keeps our heart small and obscures our potential. Developing a heart that cares for all returns us to our open being.
